The State of Georgia Tech Athletics

0-6 vs UGA
No top 25 finishes
No seasons with less than 5 losses
One division title, no conference championships
8 All-ACC players this year, and another trip to a west coast bowl

That’s why Gailey’s gone. If you want some much better commentary about the Georgia game, check out GT alum and current radio host Ryan Stewart’s article here. He pretty much sums up what fans disliked about Gailey, and indirectly makes a case for why Tenuta shouldn’t be the next head coach. As for the next head coach, the more I hear about the two men, the more I want either Chris Hatcher or Charlie Strong.

Hatcher coached at DII Valdosta State until last year and took the team to a national title and a runner-up finish 2 years before that. He currently coaches at DI-AA Georgia Southern where he turned returned a storied program that went 3-8 last year into a respectable 7-4 with a win over App State and no loss by more than a score. He’s a former QB at Valdosta State and I think would do a great job helping to develop quarterbacks here, something Gailey could not do.

Strong is the D-coordinator at Florida right now. He’s a young guy with good energy and a great ability to recruit. Being in the middle of the southeast, Tech should be able to pick from the best talent in the nation. I’m not asking for a top 10 class every year, but no more of these 50th and 60th ranked classes that Gailey had been pulling in until two years ago.

Anyway, since I can only do so much in the process I’m going to leave it at that.

As for basketball, the team is growing nicely. I don’t understand why GT has such terrible fans, but our guys just played the number 13 team in the country, at their house, and only lost by 4. In fact, having watched the game, there were times when we were clearly the better team. If that’s not something to be excited about then I don’t know why you even bother watching sports.

No one had, or shall I say should have had, delusions of this team being a world beater after losing its best two players, its senior leader, and having two rookie PGs up top. If this team had kept Thad and Critt, or even just Critt really, they would be a top 10 team right now, easily. Causey and Morris are growing nicely, they’ve played 6 games of D1 ball, so hold off on calling Causey a bum or Morris the next Zam. By the way, I’m aware Causey played D1 at Georgetown, but that was 4 years ago and he’s been at North Georgia ever since.

Oh, and by the way, if people want to criticize Jeremis Smith they might as well turn in their tickets. Dude is averaging 12/8, shooting 50% with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 all while being the team’s emotional leader. Sorry he’s not Kevin Durant guys, guess we might as well stop watching.

I hope this team continues to grow and improve this year. It’ll be sad to lose Smith and Morrow next season, but Gani will be better, Clinch will be a senior sharpshooter, and Iman Shumpert (the 5th best player in next years class) will come in to help sure up the guard position. Things are still good guys, just roll with it.
