The State of Georgia Tech Athletics

November 28th, 2007 — 8:50am

0-6 vs UGA
No top 25 finishes
No seasons with less than 5 losses
One division title, no conference championships
8 All-ACC players this year, and another trip to a west coast bowl

That’s why Gailey’s gone. If you want some much better commentary about the Georgia game, check out GT alum and current radio host Ryan Stewart’s article here. He pretty much sums up what fans disliked about Gailey, and indirectly makes a case for why Tenuta shouldn’t be the next head coach. As for the next head coach, the more I hear about the two men, the more I want either Chris Hatcher or Charlie Strong.

Hatcher coached at DII Valdosta State until last year and took the team to a national title and a runner-up finish 2 years before that. He currently coaches at DI-AA Georgia Southern where he turned returned a storied program that went 3-8 last year into a respectable 7-4 with a win over App State and no loss by more than a score. He’s a former QB at Valdosta State and I think would do a great job helping to develop quarterbacks here, something Gailey could not do.

Strong is the D-coordinator at Florida right now. He’s a young guy with good energy and a great ability to recruit. Being in the middle of the southeast, Tech should be able to pick from the best talent in the nation. I’m not asking for a top 10 class every year, but no more of these 50th and 60th ranked classes that Gailey had been pulling in until two years ago.

Anyway, since I can only do so much in the process I’m going to leave it at that.

As for basketball, the team is growing nicely. I don’t understand why GT has such terrible fans, but our guys just played the number 13 team in the country, at their house, and only lost by 4. In fact, having watched the game, there were times when we were clearly the better team. If that’s not something to be excited about then I don’t know why you even bother watching sports.

No one had, or shall I say should have had, delusions of this team being a world beater after losing its best two players, its senior leader, and having two rookie PGs up top. If this team had kept Thad and Critt, or even just Critt really, they would be a top 10 team right now, easily. Causey and Morris are growing nicely, they’ve played 6 games of D1 ball, so hold off on calling Causey a bum or Morris the next Zam. By the way, I’m aware Causey played D1 at Georgetown, but that was 4 years ago and he’s been at North Georgia ever since.

Oh, and by the way, if people want to criticize Jeremis Smith they might as well turn in their tickets. Dude is averaging 12/8, shooting 50% with an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.5 all while being the team’s emotional leader. Sorry he’s not Kevin Durant guys, guess we might as well stop watching.

I hope this team continues to grow and improve this year. It’ll be sad to lose Smith and Morrow next season, but Gani will be better, Clinch will be a senior sharpshooter, and Iman Shumpert (the 5th best player in next years class) will come in to help sure up the guard position. Things are still good guys, just roll with it.

Where I’ve Been

November 20th, 2007 — 9:08pm

Got a job, working on another website, and trying to avoid wasting time on the internet for the most part.

Nothing major to report on any of those fronts yet, but hopefully my “wasted time avoidance” will continue.  I’ve been able to play a lot more basketball because of it, which makes me happy.

Only other thing to add right now is that I’m not applying to MIT any more.  The essay questions were kinda lame and I didn’t think I had good answers for them.  Considering it’s a school I have little chance of getting in to anyway, weak essay answers are a plenty good enough reason to save the $230 application fee.  I’m not sure if I’m going to look for a replacement program to apply to or what.  We’ll see if one jumps out at me.  Maybe NYU.

And, since it’s that time of year, To Hell With Georgia.

Now you thought I was just 7-7-0

November 5th, 2007 — 7:00pm

Luda’s got it right. Not only is it by far the best area code, it’s my GMAT score. 50 on Quant, 45 on Verbal, 770 overall.

For comparison’s sake (and make me feel good about myself’s sake), here’s a list of the highest average GMAT scores for some top schools:

Stanford – 720
Penn (Wharton) – 714
Dartmouth (Tuck) – 710
Columbia – 708
Harvard – 707

So I like where I stand there.

Now for something completely unrelated. Have you ever thought that a cover of a song is better than the original? Here’s a pretty good example of that I think. The song is Penelope, originally by Pinback and then covered by Saosin. BTW, if you like the Saosin guy’s voice don’t bother listening to the CD that’s out because it’s a different lead singer. Go get some Circa Survive instead.

Also, ignore the youtube people’s stupid artsy videos.

Pinback – Penelope (original)

Saosin – Penelope (acoustic cover)

Just about go time

November 2nd, 2007 — 10:52am

I’ve reviewed what I feel like I need to, so now I just have to wait 24 hours until I start the GMAT.  I’ll probably go through a few problems tonight, but nothing serious, and then do a few more tomorrow morning just to get my brain working before the test.  If I don’t know it now though, then I’m pretty much screwed.  So instead I’m going to spend my day playing basketball, listening to music and watching movies.  In other words, basically the same way Pete spends every day.

I did, however, manage to narrow down what schools I’ll be sending my scores to.  The thought process was:
1. I want to stay in Atlanta unless I get into a great school .
2. I almost certainly won’t get into Harvard, Stanford or Wharton even if I manage to pull an 800, so don’t bother.
3. No midwest (includes Chicago and Michigan) or middle-of-nowhere.
4. No UCLA (unfortunate, because I think it could be a good fit, but, you know).

So the list is as follows: Georgia Tech, Emory, Georgia State, Cal-Berkeley (Haas), MIT (Sloan)

I toyed around with NYU (Stern) and might still send my scores there after the fact, but we’ll see.  At this point, GaState is a total backup and I’m not entirely sure I would even go if that was the only place I got into.  I might just wait a year and then try again.

Anyway, off to shoot around so that I don’t miss two free throws and a layup that cost the team all of our comeback momentum next time we have a league game.
