How do I write a business plan?

May 30th, 2007 — 8:44pm

Anyone feel like helping out with this?  Obviously I can use google to find some generic answers but I’d like something a little more in depth.

Fact is that I have absolutely no idea how this kind of stuff works and I’m realizing that planning out a business idea is actually pretty important in the grand scheme of things.  I don’t have any awesome business idea right now, but I’m toying with some and would like to flesh them out a little more.  The thing is though, I know that I won’t consider everything that I need to.  I just don’t have the understanding.

MLS Weekend Recap

May 28th, 2007 — 7:58am

Since this is my newest sports obsession with only one NBA game a day (if we’re lucky) and the dog days of baseball almost here, I’m going to give everyone a rundown on the week’s action.

Thursday

CHI 0 – 3 RBNY – Red Bull New York is the best team in the league hands down. Jozy Altidore is a star in training who will be playing in the highest leagues of European soccer before all is said and done. Juan Pablo Angel is the best player to come over to MLS, at least until Beckham, and will probably still have the biggest impact on his team. Clint Mathis is having a career resurgence under Bruce Arena, where everyone thought that the two of them together would lead to nothing but frustration. And this latest run is all with a backup goalie who’s posted two consecutive clean sheets.

Saturday

TFC 2 – 2 CLB – Toronto got their first road point against a not good Columbus Crew team. I thought TFC might be able to pull off a win with their now potent attack and Crew’s bad offense, but Andy “Elbows” Herron’s return meant that Crew could score again. He scored two goals in 36 minutes of play before going out with a groin strain and Crew was lifeless without him. Dichio got another goal that was assisted by new pick up Cunningham (who also knocked a winning attempt off the post). Jim Brennan’s tying goal off a set piece was a great strike from about 25 yards out.

KC 4 – 3 NE – Eddie Johnson heard all of the criticism of him before the season and blew up. Nice hat-trick kid. Huge huge huge win for KC who just validated their season, which had been full of wins over bad teams. This game was a ton of fun to watch, and I’ll skip the commentary to just post the scoring:
NE — Steve Ralston 2 (unassisted) 11
NE — Taylor Twellman 7 (unassisted) 23
KC — Davy Arnaud 2 (Sasha Victorine 2) 25
KC — Eddie Johnson 4 (Jack Jewsbury 1) 26
KC — Eddie Johnson 5 (Davy Arnaud 3) 38
NE — Shalrie Joseph 3 (penalty kick) 69
KC — Eddie Johnson 6 (Carlos Marinelli 1) 82

HOU 1 – 2 DCU – I didn’t watch this, but this was a rematch of the Cup Finals last year. I will say that it’s good to see DC picking up steam again since they’re the team that represents MLS most often in international competitions. I think they were really tired to start the season right after the CCC and it’s taken them a while to hit their stride. As for Houston, while it’s good to see De Rosario score again, they are still struggling mightily. Again DC proves it’s one of the best markets as over 18,000 people show up for the match.

LA 0 – 1 COL – I didn’t watch any of this game either outside of the highlights. Galaxy continue to be awful and Donovan continues to struggle. I really hope he doesn’t play forward over Twellmen or Johnson in the Gold Cup, but I know he will. Blech. Colorado basically controlled the game and should’ve won by a lot more after LA went down a man in the 25th minute. Hercules Gomez missed two wide open header chances before burying the third, but it was enough.

FCD 0 – 2 CHV – Chivas USA is not good, their fans are not good, but they managed to pull off a win against a Dallas team that should’ve handled them. Maybe if the Mexican team sent some players to the US team they would see a better turnout and better results, but whatever. It’s a shame they’re having so much trouble in the front third because Ante Razov and Maykel Galindo could put up some serious numbers if they were ever able to get a decent cross.

Sunday

CHI 0 – 0 RSL – Yawn. Actually, the game did have a lot of chances, with Chicago getting the vast majority, but neither were able to capitalize. Shocking since neither of these teams are very good. Also, Adu was taken off for the first time this year after 57 minutes. Welcome to Bust-ville, population Adu. If he really wanted to play in Europe you’d expect him to show up at least once in 7 games of MLS action so far.

Good Effing Day

May 22nd, 2007 — 9:39pm

Somehow the Hawks  ducked David Stern’s apparent hatred for tanking teams and ended up with 2 top 11 picks in the NBA lottery.  Lots of combinations will make me happy here.  Yi Jianlian/Al Horford and Conley Jr/Crittenton/Law IV, Conley and Hawes/Hibbert, etc.  God willing, Billy Knight won’t end up sticking us with Corey Brewer and Josh McRoberts.

The Braves exposed Senor Smoke for the scrub he is and beat the Mets 8-1.  I’m embarassed to have had my picture taken with you on my birthday Jorge Sosa.  The Mets are clearly a better team than the Braves, but keeping it close is always nice.

And finally, the most important entry of them all.  The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team won the national championship tonight.  It’s the first fuly recognized championship for a Tech team (b/c NCAA football is weird) and it went to a great group.  I’m glad I got to know some of those people when I worked at the tennis center, and I can tell you that Bryan Shelton and Alison Silverio deserve this as much as anyone.

So yeah.  All around the sports world today pretty much rocked.

Flickr Up

May 20th, 2007 — 9:31am

Ok, so I’m not that good at coding stuff, so I can’t make that pictures link up there go to my Flickr page yet. I will keep trying though.

Anyway, the link to get there is: http://www.flickr.com/photos/theryananderson/ and hopefully I will end up getting a new camera soon so I can start taking more pictures for it. Flickr kinda has a weird interface where it just shows what you’ve uploaded in that order initially. If you don’t really feel like browsing through them like that, check out the tag page. This has keywords I’ve attached to different pictures based on what’s going on in them.

It would also be helpful if I bothered to set up a professional account so that I could make more than 3 sets and have more than 200 pictures up. They might just sucker me into this, but not yet at least.

I no longer cheer for losers

May 15th, 2007 — 7:34am

Well, I missed the game on Saturday because I was out looking at condos with Jen and her family but my MLS rooting interest finally won a game.  Toronto FC beat the Chicago Fire 3-1 at home and it looks like a great game to have seen.  I was lucky enough to catch some of the action when they replayed the match at 11pm Saturday night on FSC, but the video highlights are still up here.

The stadium was packed again with 20,000 people going insane for the whole match.  The game came to a stop after each of the goals TFC scored as the complimentary seat cushions given to fans started to rain down on the field.

Hopefully the rest of the league takes note that this is what a crowd should be and hopefully these fans are rewarded with more performances like this throughout the season.

Also, I’m almost finished uploading all the pictures to Flickr, at which point I will just change where the link on the title bar goes to.  It sucks that Flickr does such a good job of reeling you in with the “sets” feature and then springs it on you that you have to pay for an upgraded account to have more than 3 of them.  It almost hooked me on the $25 upgrade though, so I guess good job out of them.

Joining the Revolution

May 9th, 2007 — 6:47pm

Still not down with the idea of twitter, but I’m moving all of my pictures over to flickr finally.

I just realized yesterday that in my attempts to organize my pictures a year or so ago that what I really wanted was a medium like flickr.  I haven’t browsed around much on it, but what I have done has impressed me.  Also, they are growing and growing and growing and it’s about time that I realized that the people must actually have a clue what’s going on.

I’m still not down with myspace and have cooled considerably on facebook over the past year or so.  This twitter thing people keep talking about is still just jibber-jabber to me.  Well, I understand it, but I just I don’t think I’m a very social-networking kinda guy.

I got over the hump with flickr though, so let’s see what comes next.

Made to Stick review and a new book

May 7th, 2007 — 6:05pm

Made to Stick is an okay book. I think I fell for the hype in Fast Company magazine without realizing at the time that Chip and Dan Heath wrote for the magazine. I don’t know if they started writing for them on the basis of their book, or if they were contributors beforehand, but either way I kinda wish I would’ve known ahead of time.

Like I said though, it’s a decent book. It covers some pretty basic stuff as far as actual tactics for making things memorable are concerned using a pretty lame acronym SUCCES. However, the part that kept me interested in the book were the different studies they referenced while making their points. While not as interesting as the stuff in The Tipping Point on the whole, they were still mildly intriguing. If this ever comes out in paperback or goes in the Border’s 3 for 2 shelf, maybe pick it up if it’s something you might be interested in.

My new book is going to be A Year in the Merde, which is my first fiction attempt since I stopped reading a short story anthology about a year ago.

Graduation Time

May 4th, 2007 — 6:42am

I graduated in December, but that seems to be the outlier.  Tomorrow starts the real rush on graduation.  People who I know are graduating include: Aaron, Elsberry, Jen, Will, lots of UGA people, and maybe Steve.  People are know who still aren’t graduating include Mike.  He may not graduate this decade, but at least he’ll have a handful of degrees when he does get around to it.
So, to celebrate all of this there is a party tomorrow at Aaron’s house in Peachtree City.  Nothing huge, probably 30 or so people rotating through during the day but it should be fun.  Also this party serves as a going away party for Elsberry who will celebrate his graduation next week by flying across the ocean for a Jim Morrison-esque summer long stay in Europe with a little less death.  The sad part is, even if he does decide to come back at the end of the trip (and there are serious doubts about that) he’s going up to Seattle or Portland for a job opportunity so we’ll probably never see him again outside of homecoming games.  Good luck man.
