That SNG week

July 31st, 2005 — 2:03am

Turns out I ran a lot worse Wednesday and Thursday than I thought I did. Oh well, what are you gonna do? You can see that I’m either running or playing poorly because there are a lot more 2nd place finishes than 1st or 3rds. Ideally, 1sts and 3rds should both be about equal, and higher than 2nd place.

If you get 1 1st and 1 3rd, that means you get 50% of the pool, and 20% percent of the pool, for an average of 35% of the pool. However, if you get 2 2nds, you’re getting 30% of the prize pool twice. Anyway, here’s the picture for those of you who care about that sorta thing.

Ve-freakin-gas

July 30th, 2005 — 12:33am

So soon. Sooo soon. I can’t wait. There’s going to be so much craziness, all of which will be chronicled with pictures and updates. I’ll be taking the laptop with me, but I’ll only be able to update if/when I can find some sort of free wireless signal out there.

I’ve decided about $1k should be plenty for gambling, poker, drinking, and general partying. I really don’t want to dip back into my roll, so I’m going to try to earn it by the time I leave. I have a little more than 2 weeks from today, so it really shouldn’t be TOO hard as long as I put in the effort. I figure there are enough casinos on the strip, that at least one of them will let me gamble away a few hundred dollars even if I will be a few days shy of 21.

Also, I doubt that I’m going to go out to some of the clubs with everybody, just because I don’t want to press my luck. Instead, I’ll probably use those times to go to one of the poker rooms, since I’m sure very few of the others (actually, probably nobody) is going to be playing cards that don’t involve the words “Hit” and “Stay.” It’ll be my chance to actually make money on the trip, and maybe even offset some of the gambling I do after a Corona or 14.

Also, Matt, you were saying something about that house in Atlanta. If there’s a room open, let me know, I haven’t seen you online.

Sorry about that

July 27th, 2005 — 11:39pm

I’ve been really busy playing poker and going to parties on the weekend lately, so I haven’t been able to update anything. Anyway, I’ll just say that the week turned out well, even though I wasn’t able to play all 5 days because of problems getting my tournament histories from Eurobet.

Anyway, I earned about $800 after winnings and rakeback I believe, so all in all it was a very good week. There’s really not much else to say right now. I’m playing a few tournament, so I’m not thinking about what I’m typing. Sorry if this comes out convoluted or something.

Anyway, I’ll try to get more information about last week, from parties to poker, up sometime tomorrow.

Day 1 Stats

July 20th, 2005 — 9:33am

Enjoy. My internet access is going a little crazy, so I’ll probably put the tourneys from day 2 up in a little bit before I start playing today. You know the deal by now, click a picture to see the bigger version.

Just a little note on stats, ROI means Return On Investment, and ITM means In The Money. An ITM finish means 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, basically that you won money for your participation in the tournament. ROI is a calculatable way to measure how much you’re winning per tournament. If you place first in a $22 sit-n-go tournament, for instance, you get $100. You spent $22 to get into it, so your ROI would be +356% = [(100-22)/22]. If you finish 10th-4th, you have an ROI of -100%. So, that’s the basic idea. In the 11s and 22s an ROI of >20% is easily sustainable.

First, what 6 tabling looks like on the laptop

Now, the fun stuff. This is how I’ll be putting up pictures of each day from now on.

Updates

July 19th, 2005 — 10:16pm

I’ve had two good days, but I can’t give you any more updates. I’ve made $418 over the past two days, and have been running really well. I want to put up some screen shots of the information, but I don’t have any image editing software on the laptop, so I can’t resize the screenshots I took. I’m going to try to move the images over to the desktop later so I can get them up here.

I’ve been playing about three times as many 11s as 22s so far. Basically, when I play on the laptop, I 6-table with 4 11s open on Empire, and 2 22s open on Eurobet. As soon as my Empire bankroll gets up a little higher (maybe $800 or $900) I’ll start playing the 22s on there too. I’m at $545 right now, so it’ll probably take a little while to get up there, but we’ll see. My Eurobet account is doing a lot better, just shy of $1300, so I’m not in any trouble there playing the 22s.

Anyway, I’ll try to get the data up shortly. Hopefully by early tomorrow. I’ll probably end up buying Photoshop Elements for the laptop anyway. I feel bad that I have used so much Adobe software, but never paid for anything.

Challenge Week #2

July 17th, 2005 — 10:38pm

I still don’t play very much, and that means I’m not making as much money as I should be. That really pisses me off too, now that I think about it. Anyway, in a last ditch effort to actually put in hours, I’ve made a prop bet with another 2+2 poster.

Basically, we each have to play 40 sit-n-go tournaments a day. For every tournament that one of us is short, we owe the other person $5. So, if I don’t put it any hours tomorrow and play 0 tournaments, I owe him $200. That sucks, and I really don’t want to pay him any money.

Also, I finally got my Empire account funded, so I’ll be 6 tabling for the whole week, with maybe some 8 tabling at the end when I start to get comfortable. Most of these tournaments with be more of the 11s while I’m getting used to playing more at once, but I’ll be mixing in plenty of the 22s by the end of the week.

As for expected profit, if I play just the 11s this week, and get 200 total in at a 20% ROI (return on investment), which I should be able to do pretty easily unless I run bad, I will make $440. Either way, I’ll try to update every day with some basic stats from the day, and give you an idea of what I’m making.

Side note: I was supposed to be drinking with Alexis right now, but she’s obviously being lame and reading more Harry Potter. Not cool Alex, not cool.

Laptop

July 15th, 2005 — 11:09am

I finally spent my poker money on something worthwhile. $1150 late I end up with a Dell 6000. Here are some specs for the other tech nerds:

1.6 GHz Centrino Processor with 533MB FSB
512 MB RAM
60GB Hard-disk
1920×1200 WUXGA display

It’s a whole new experience to be able to play poker and watch tv at the same time. I really really like it. I really don’t like playing with the touchpad though, so I went out and spent a little money on this mouse. I’m not a huge fan of using a small mouse, but it works better on random surfaces (especially wood, and leather) than any other mouse I’ve used.

Anyway, I’m about $20 away from moving up to playing the $22 sit-n-go tournaments exclusively on my Eurobet account. I got my Empire account set up with 30% rakeback, and hopefully my new NETeller account will be up and running in the next couple days so I can deposit and start 6 and 8 tabling more often.

That’s pretty much it for now. I’m going up to Atlanta tonight for Chad’s birthday party, and hopefully I’ll go see Wedding Crashers tomorrow, or sometime shortly thereafter so I probably won’t get too much play in after today. I’m on track to have my best earnings month ever right now, which is extra nice as bonuses seem to be less frequent. I have a program for tournaments that should make it possible for me to put some graphs on here later, showing you how I’m doing. We’ll see if it works.

Later.

125 Unanswered Questions

July 10th, 2005 — 2:51am

This is a really cool collection of articles about 125 questions that science hasn’t answered yet. If you’re not a dork, it probably won’t matter much to you, but if you are, this is hours of entertainment. The top 25 have some short essays written about what the problem is, and some basic ideas as to how to solve it.

Anyway, here’s a link to the site, and some of the questions I liked.

http://www.sciencemag.org/sciext/125th/

-What Is the Universe Made Of?
-What is the Biological Basis of Consciousness?
-How Does Earth’s Interior Work?
-Are We Alone in the Universe?
-How Are Memories Stored and Retrieved?
-How Hot Will the Greenhouse World Be?
-Is ours the only universe?
-What is the most powerful laser researchers can build?
-What is the ultimate efficiency of photovoltaic cells?
-What causes ice ages?
-What causes reversals in Earth’s magnetic field?
-How do organs and whole organisms know when to stop growing?
-Why do we sleep?
-Why do we dream?
-What is the biological basis of addiction?
-Why were some dinosaurs so large?
*this one is so cool, here’s what they say:
Dinosaurs reached almost unimaginable sizes, some in less than 20 years. But how did the long-necked sauropods, for instance, eat enough to pack on up to 100 tons without denuding their world?
Whoa, think about it.

So, go check that page out, and think about stuff. Figure one of the questions out, and collect your Nobel Prize, then get back to me with the answer.

BTW: 11 tournaments so far today, +$189. Awesome.

Going to Nevada

This sounds so freakin cool. It’s a shame I’ll probably be too scared to actually go out on it.

The Canyon Skywalk

By Glen Meek

It is one of the great natural wonders of the world — and it will soon to be joined by an engineering marvel.

A fantastic glass bridge arcing 60-feet out over the grand canyon — giving visitors an unobstructed view 4000-feet straight down.

Sheri Yellowhawk, tribal executive says “That’s gonna be a scary view. It’s gonna be exciting. It’s gonna be a once in a lifetime view.

It may be scarey indeed having nothing more than sheets of glass separating you from eternity.

But the bridge has been engineered to withstand 100-mile per hour winds, magnitude 8 earthquakes — and hold the weight of 71-jumbo jetliners.

The glass bridge — officially called the canyon skywalk — been under construction for months here on the west rim of the grand canyon.

It’s being built on Hualapai tribal lands — and the tribe hopes it will become one of the biggest attractions in the southwest.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of this year and when it’s up and running, the hualapai expect as many as 3-million people a year will come here — and take a walk out over the edge.

The idea for the skywalk came from las vegas tour operator David Jin, and its It has taken nearly a decade to turn his dream into a reality.

But not everyone was sold on the idea at first.

There were elders — and others — concerned about any construction on pristine native lands.

Tribal Executive Sheri Yellowhawk says “We had the area blessed. We had the elders come out and they talked about it and they said We would like to keep our land the way it is, but we have to look at the future of our kids, to have something that’s economiocally feasable for their future

The financial future of the Hualapai is tied to tourism. They are not a gaming tribe.

But they are betting that — when it comes to the skywalk — if they build it — you will come
